The primary distinction is the awarding body. Universities under the UGC award MBA degrees. Autonomous institutes (not affiliated with a university, like XLRI or MDI) approved by AICTE award PGDM diplomas. In terms of curriculum, industry acceptance, and job opportunities, top-tier PGDM programs are considered equivalent to, and often more prestigious than, many MBA degrees in India.
It is not mandatory but highly recommended. Most students in top B-schools in India have 2-4 years of work experience. This experience adds significant value to classroom discussions (which are often case-based) and is highly valued by recruiters during final placements. For an Executive MBA, however, it is a mandatory requirement.
